CAIRO, 23 May 2012 – A regional meeting of experts held in Cairo could result in a doubling of the number of Arab countries that systematically report on disaster losses.

UNISDR brought together over 40 participants from 15 Arab countries to discuss and exchange experiences on establishing national disaster loss databases. These disaster inventories (www.desinventar.net) enable countries to analyse disaster trends and their impacts in a systematic manner through the collection of historical disaster data.

May 22, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Presidential assistant of Sudan, Nafie Ali Nafie, criticized on Tuesday calls within the country for granting foreign aid groups access to the war-battered region of South Kordofan.

Khartoum has been blocking humanitarian assistance from reaching areas held by the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) in South Kordofan, citing concerns over aid falling into the hands of the insurgents and expressing skepticism over the intentions of foreign aid groups.

May 22, 2012 (JUBA) — The US government has announced $30m cash donation directed towards the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) emergency relief operation, specifically targeting conflict-affected and food-insecure people in South Sudan.

The donation, to be delivered through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is reportedly in response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the world’s newest nation, where an estimated one million people are severely food-insecure due to a cereal deficit, high food prices and inter-communal conflict.

Darfur is threatened with food insecurity and in need of urgent aid.

The Programme conducted surveys in Darfur finding around 30 percent to be in need of urgent assistance, said WFP Field Coordinator Adham Mesallami to Radio Dabanga.

He said that families told the WFP about their inability to cover their daily needs for food.

KHARTOUM, May 22, 2012 (AFP) - Sudan and South Sudan will resume talks next week that were suspended after border fighting in April, African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki said on Tuesday.

"Now we have an agreement from both presidents, President (Omar-al) Bashir and President Salva Kiir, that the lead negotiation panels from both sides will meet next week," Mbeki said after meeting the Sudanese leader.

KHARTOUM, May 22, 2012 (AFP) - One person was killed when a car exploded on Sudan's Red Sea coast on Tuesday, state media reported, about a year after Sudan blamed Israel for an air strike in the same region.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the blast, which witnesses said left two holes in the road.

"A car exploded inside Port Sudan and the body of the driver was burned completely. Police are investigating," Radio Omdurman reported.

In the remote Jebel Si area of North Darfur, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) runs a hospital, five health posts, and a mobile clinic. These are the only health facilities in the area, and they serve a permanent population of 100,000, as well as about 10,000 seasonal nomads. The majority of MSF’s patients in Jebel Si are women and children.

JUBA, May 22, 2012 (AFP) - South Sudan said Tuesday Sudanese war planes have launched air strikes against its territory, the latest in a series of attacks that threaten to scupper international efforts to restart peace talks.

"South Sudan views the current aerial bombardment... as a serious threat to both regional and international peace and security," South Sudan's Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin told reporters.

MSF forced to suspend lifesaving medical activities after restrictions imposed on its work

Khartoum 22 May 2012. As a result of increasing restrictions imposed by Sudanese authorities, the medical humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has been forced to suspend most of its medical activities in the conflict area of Jebel Si, in Sudan’s North Darfur State. MSF is the sole health provider in the region.

May 21, 2012 (JUBA) - Hundred of citizens from the contested region of Abyei demonstrated across South Sudan and in the United States on Monday, according to an official from the area, in protest at the failure of the Sudanese government to withdraw troops from the area.

A resolution from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on May 2, as per a roadmap laid out by the African Union, called for both Sudan and South Sudan to withdraw armed forces from the area.

May 21, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese government is expecting to get an important Arab support in a ministerial meeting to be held next month to discuss ways to boost peace and development in the troubled east African country.

Last March the Arab summit held in Bagdad decided to convene a special meeting at the level of foreign minister to discuss how the states members can support Sudan which is facing economic and political crisis.

21 May, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s Interior Minister Ibrahim Ahmad Mahmoud has revealed that their estimates on the number of Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries are vastly different from those of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Speaking at a session of the council of states in the capital Khartoum on Monday, Mahmoud said that his ministry estimates the number of Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries to be in the region of 244,000.

SALLUM, Egypt, May 21 (UNHCR) – Andrew Mok, computer open in front of him, faced the Sudanese man across the table in a converted freight container and began the interview.

"Please do not make any false statements because that could have a negative impact on your application," the 23-year-old from Hong Kong informed the man, who was bidding to be recognized as a refugee. "Everything you tell UNHCR will be strictly confidential," he added, reassuringly.

Reaffirming its commitment and support, the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany signed an agreement with IGAD to enhance the capacity of the organization to achieve its mandate and increase drought resilience in the region.

The Executive Secretary of IGAD, Eng. Mahboub Maalim, who signed the agreement in the presence of Mr. Mathias Richter, The Chargé d'affaires of the German Embassy of Djibouti, underlined the long friendship and cooperation between IGAD and Germany.

KHARTOUM, May 21, 2012 (AFP) - Gunfire broke out on Monday at a refugee camp on the Sudanese border with Eritrea during a clash between refugees and police that left one policeman wounded, witnesses said.

About 300 people had gathered outside the administration office of Shagarab camp, which is largely populated by Eritreans, to protest security conditions, a local aid worker said.

They were upset after the recent kidnapping of asylum seekers from inside the camp, according to the witness.
