JOMBA, DR Congo, May 26, 2012 (AFP) - Mutinous troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo said Saturday they had repulsed attacks by government forces in heavy fighting in the eastern Nord-Kivu province.
Lieutenant Colonel Vianney Kazarama, spokesman of the rebel March 23 Movement (M23), said government troops using both light and heavy weapons were trying to capture Mbuzi, a hilltop base of the deserters.
"But they failed this morning, we beat them back," he added.

If confirmed, the latest toll of clashes underway for weeks in North Kivu released by the civil society of the strife-torn East province, on the border with Uganda and Rwanda, is high: around a hundred people, mainly civilians, were killed in Kitchanga, in the Masisi territory, some fifty wounded and several women were raped. In a reconstruction by local MISNA sources, who requested to remain anonymous, FARDC regular troops were responsible for the violence.

Violence is continuing in the Kivus, where it is spreading to the most remote and difficult-to-reach areas, with tragic consequences. The ICRC is concerned about the rising number of civilian victims. It is calling on all parties to the conflict to spare the civilian population.
BANGKOK, 25 May 2012 - Early next week in Bangkok, Asian and Pacfic media and 10 UN agencies will participate in a special pre-session of a media summit organized by the Asia Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (APIBD), to review regional progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
At this pre-session, media and the UN agencies, including the UN Disaster Risk Reduction Office (UNISDR), will look at how they can work more closely to contribute towards the MDGs and its outcomes beyond 2015.

The Prosecutor of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda Mr. Hassan Bubacar Jallow today handed over, in compliance with the Tribunal’s Referral Chamber’s order, the material supporting the Indictment against Ladislas Ntagazwa and other relevant evidence in his case file to Mr. Alphonse Hitiyaremye, the Deputy Prosecutor General of Rwanda’s National Prosecution Authority.

This Thursday and Friday in The Hague, the International Contact Group on the Great Lakes Region will meet again. Since the early 2000s, the contact group, a body that consists of representatives from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the European Union, and the United Nations, has met on a quarterly basis to focus on political, diplomatic, security, and development issues in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

Sept rebelles des Forces démocratiques pour la libération du Rwanda (FDLR) assiègent depuis la semaine dernière la localité de Fungolamatcho dans le territoire de Lubero en Province Orientale. Dans un communiqué de presse rendu public mardi 22 mai, la société civile de cette cité indique que ces combattants recrutent de force, sous la conduite d’un capitaine, des jeunes gens comme orpailleurs, afin d’extraire de l’or dans la rivière Lubero.

Since then, Congolese refugees have been seeking shelter in Rwanda, escaping clashes between DRC government forces and armed militia. The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is working in Rwanda's Nkamira transit camp, improving the condition of the camp's sanitation in efforts to reduce the spread of disease.
