Norway is providing an additional NOK 40 million to assist the victims of the drought in the Sahel. "I have seen with my own eyes how important it is that help reaches those in need," commented Minister of International Development Heikki Holmås.

This week, Mr Holmås has been visiting Niger, one of the drought affected countries in the Sahel Belt south of the Sahara.

Jordan is the first country in the Middle East to be declared mine free. HRH Crown Prince Hussein thanked HRH Crown Prince Haakon for Norway’s contribution to the clearing of all known minefields in the country. By clearing all mines Jordan has fulfilled its obligations under the Mine Ban Treaty. “A significant achievement”, said Crown Prince Haakon.

Nairobi, 10 April 2012 - Around 120 representatives from some 20 African countries, NGOs, UN Agencies and other organizations have together stressed the need for greater support for climate change adaptation efforts in Africa, following a workshop held at the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

The event entitled Sharing Lessons in Africa on Climate Change Adaptation was organized by the CC-DARE Initiative (Climate Change Adaptation and Development), which is jointly run by UNEP and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

Hundreds of thousands of poor people will go without life-saving medicines and many more children will miss out on school because of the first cuts in global aid since 1997, Oxfam warned today as the OECD published its annual report showing how much donors give to poor countries.

Oxfam said the figures showed the importance of the UK sticking to its commitment to meet the target of giving 0.7 per cent of national income in aid next year. The OECD’s figures show a surprise fall in UK aid of $100m in real terms or 0.8 per cent between 2010-11.

A precious resource to boost work for human rights throughout Europe

A few years ago, the Norwegian government launched a project to give support to Council of Europe member countries in carrying out the work needed to implement the judgments of the Court of Human Rights. The initiative came from a realisation that many member states faced difficulties in changing their law or national practices simply because of financial or structural obstacles, and that what was needed was a structure to help with capacity building and expert support.

Nairobi, March 2012 - The Government of Norway has delivered a major boost to efforts to protect vulnerable communities in Ethiopia from the impacts of climate change, with a donation of over $1.5 million to the Ethiopian Environment Ministry.

The money will allow existing projects, which encourage local communities to fight food insecurity and environmental degradation linked to climate change, to be upscaled and duplicated in other parts of the country.

Norway is contributing NOK 22 million to organisations that are providing emergency relief to Syria and assisting Syrian refugees. “I am deeply concerned that the Syrian authorities are not allowing aid organisations necessary access to provide emergency relief in conflict areas, particularly in the city of Homs. Norway urges the Syrian authorities to give humanitarian aid organisations full access to those in need without delay,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Today, Norway transferred NOK 240 million in budget support to the Palestinian Authority (PA). Norway is one of the first donor countries to transfer its contribution for 2012.

Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who met the Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in Ramallah today, commented, “This funding will be used to implement the National Development Plan. It is an important contribution that will help the PA to maintain vital services to the Palestinian people, such as education, health and security services.”

Norway is to donate NOK 11 million to a new fund for Somalia. The international Stability Fund will improve the lives of Somalis by supporting local efforts to promote reconciliation.

“We would like to help bring about greater stability in Somalia by supporting development and the establishment of functioning authorities at the local level. People need to have access to health services and education,” said Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim.

Norway announced today a new donation of NOK 11 million (USD 2 million) for Restoring Dignity, a fundraising appeal for the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Lebanon.

UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet has joined a prestigious reference group for a new research project on the economic benefits of investing in women’s health.

The Norwegian-led research will build on existing studies that refer to the positive “ripple effects” for families and communities when women’s health, education and employment are promoted. It responds to the need for a better understanding of the ways in which investing in women’s health can contribute to economic growth.

Jerusalem: The Head of the WHO West Bank and Gaza Office, Mr. Anthony Laurance, signed a funding agreement today with the Head of Development Section of the Norwegian Representative Office, Mr. Stein Torgersbråten, for a NOK 23 million (USD 3.9 million) project to establish the Palestinian National Public Health Institute (PNPHI). Also present at the signing at the WHO office in Jerusalem was Ms. Signe Marie Breivik, Program Advisor for Norway.

US$50 million promised before the second anniversary of the earthquake

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, January 12, 2012 - Eighteen months after its creation, the Haiti Reconstruction Fund (HRF) continues to receive additional contributions to help finance the country’s post-earthquake reconstruction. The latest contributions received amount to US$50 million and bring the total raised from the 19 donors to US$392 million.
