Algeria — more than 1,000 found

CAIRO, 23 May 2012 – A regional meeting of experts held in Cairo could result in a doubling of the number of Arab countries that systematically report on disaster losses.

UNISDR brought together over 40 participants from 15 Arab countries to discuss and exchange experiences on establishing national disaster loss databases. These disaster inventories (www.desinventar.net) enable countries to analyse disaster trends and their impacts in a systematic manner through the collection of historical disaster data.

ALGER, 22 mai 2012 (AFP) - L'armée algérienne a détruit en avril 4.295 mines sur les frontières est et ouest du pays, dans le cadre d'une vaste opération dans les zones minées par l'armée française durant la guerre d'Algérie (1954-1962), a indiqué mardi l'agence de presse algérienne APS.

Ces nouvelles destructions portent le nombre total général des mines détruites au 30 avril 2012, à 627.914 mines, soit 531.434 mines antipersonnel, 92.505 mines anti-groupes et 3.975 mines éclairantes, a précisé la même source.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES
· An agreement between Malian authorities and ECOWAS mediators extends the mandate of interim President Traoré and mandates a one-year transition to civilian rule.

· The number of estimated IDPs in Mali has increased to 150,460 after new assessments were conducted in Mopti cercles. A monitoring and identification system is being developed to enable more accurate IDP assessments.

· According to the Government of Mali, 1.76 million people are affected by food insecurity in the north,including Segou and Mopti regions.

  • 3,5 millions de personnes environ sont touchées par la crise alimentaire et nutritionnelle au Mali. 175000 enfants de moins de cinq ans souffrent de malnutrition aiguë sévère dans le pays, et plus 385 000 souffrent de malnutrition aiguë modérée.

  • La situation qui prévaut au nord du Mali demeure précaire, mais la grande majorité des personnes touchées par la crise alimentaire et nutritionnelle se trouve au sud et nécessite une aide d’urgence.

This report is the third annual report produced by the North Africa regional office of the African Development Bank. This year, the focus of the report is on the underlying challenges the region faced before the Arab Spring, and further explores how the political transition taking will reshape North Africa, in particular its economic future.

  • About 3.5 million people are affected by the food security and nutrition crisis in Mali. 175,000 children under five are suffering from severe acute malnutrition in the country, and 385,000 more are suffering from moderate acute malnutrition.

EU bolsters its support to reformers in its Southern and Eastern neighbourhoods

Brussels, 15 May 2012 - In May 2011, in the midst of dramatic changes sweeping the Southern Neighbourhood, the EU completed a major review of its European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). According to a policy of “more for more”, committed reformers in the EU’s Southern and Eastern neighbourhood would be awarded greater and broader EU support.

Le conflit aggrave l’insécurité alimentaire au nord Mali

L'insécurité alimentaire aiguë actuelle et projetée dans les régions de Tombouctou, Gao, et Kidal (voir Perspectives de FEWS NET Mali avril '12) est plus grave et généralisée que prévue en mars en raison des impacts du conflit en fin mars. À la mi‐avril plus de 240.000 personnes (~20 pour cent de la population des régions du nord) ont été déplacées, dont environ 147.000 se sont refugiées au Niger, au Burkina Faso, en Mauritanie et en Algérie.

• Le scrutin législatif de 2012 marque la première étape d’un cycle électoral important qui sera suivie par des élections locales, le renouvellement d’un tiers du Sénat et les élections présidentielles. Le Président de la République Abdelaziz Bouteflika s’est engagé dans un processus de réformes politiques initié par son discours du 15 avril 2011. La nouvelle Assemblée populaire nationale serait amenée à intervenir dans la révision annoncée de la Constitution.

(Algiers, May 10, 2012) – Algerian authorities have used arrests and other tactics to keep people from demonstrating in the capital in the period leading up to the May 10, 2012 elections, Human Rights Watch said today. Security forces are detaining people who try to demonstrate peacefully in Algiers, including at least one candidate for election, and have prevented people from reaching the city if they suspect them of intending to demonstrate.

The Sahel region is facing this year a new severe food and nutrition crisis. Humanitarian community is already begining assistance and is dealing with supplementary funding in order to cover the lean period which will be long.

HIGHLIGHTs/key priorities:

As of 5 May, the number of IDPs in Mali was estimated at 146,900. This figure needs updating for the three rebel-held northern regions (Gao, Kidal, Timbuktu).
