21 May 2012 - Heavy rains caused severe damages in El Progreso, Olancho and El Paraiso departments. At least 500 people were evacuated in the municipality of Trojes,
El Paraiso.

I. PRIORIDADES / PUNTOS DESTACADOS

• Más de 420 personas (96 familias) de zona rural del municipio de Roberto Payán se desplazaron al casco urbano por hostigamientos.

• Más de 350 niños, tanto de la población desplazada como de la comunidad receptora, están fuera de la escuela por la suspensión de actividades escolares.

• La población en situación de desplazamiento se encuentra hacinada en las instalaciones de una escuela y en precarias condiciones de saneamiento.

(Ouagadougou/New York/Genève, 22 mai 2012): Les Nations Unies et leurs partenaires soutiennent les efforts du gouvernement du Burkina Faso pour répondre à la crise alimentaire et nutritionnelle qui affecte 2.8 million de personnes – soit un cinquième de la population – ainsi que 60.000 réfugiés maliens, a souligné aujourd’hui la Secrétaire générale adjointe aux affaires humanitaires et Coordonnatrice des secours d’urgence, Valerie Amos.

· Plus de 18 000 personnes déplacées (3 661 ménages) au sud du Territoire de Lubero

· 8 735 déplacés assistés en biens non alimentaires par Solidarités et NRC (Programme RRMP) à Mugunga III et 2 620 personnes déplacées à Mungunga I

· Accès humanitaire réduit sur certains axes à l’est du Territoire de Masisi dû au délabrement de la route.

Humanitarian chief supports Burkina Faso’s approach to food crisis: Address urgent needs now and build resilience to future emergencies

(Ouagadougou/New York, 22 May 2012) The United Nations and its partners are supporting the efforts of the Government of Burkina Faso to respond to the food and nutrition crisis, which is affecting some 2.8 million people - or a fifth of the population - as well as some 60,000 Malian refugees, said Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos today.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES
· An agreement between Malian authorities and ECOWAS mediators extends the mandate of interim President Traoré and mandates a one-year transition to civilian rule.

· The number of estimated IDPs in Mali has increased to 150,460 after new assessments were conducted in Mopti cercles. A monitoring and identification system is being developed to enable more accurate IDP assessments.

· According to the Government of Mali, 1.76 million people are affected by food insecurity in the north,including Segou and Mopti regions.

I. FAITS SAILLANTS/PRINCIPALES PRIORITES

  • 3,5 millions de personnes environ sont touchées par la crise alimentaire et nutritionnelle au Mali. 175000 enfants de moins de cinq ans souffrent de malnutrition aiguë sévère dans le pays, et plus 385 000 souffrent de malnutrition aiguë modérée.

  • La situation qui prévaut au nord du Mali demeure précaire, mais la grande majorité des personnes touchées par la crise alimentaire et nutritionnelle se trouve au sud et nécessite une aide d’urgence.
