DAKAR, 19 October 2011 (IRIN) - As the global economy begins to be reshaped by the new emerging powers, so too is the aid industry. IRIN looks at the rise of the BRICSS (the extra ‘S’ is for South Korea) as the new donors.
BRAZIL
Brazil gave US$35.6 million in humanitarian aid 2010, and $4 billion in foreign assistance – equivalent to Sweden or Canada.
Humanitarian aid rose from $800,000 in 2009 to $36 million in 2010. Brazil gave $28.9 million in humanitarian assistance to Haiti, mostly through UN organizations.
