In the early months of 2011, more than 130,000 refugees fled into Liberia to escape fighting in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Many walked for days to find safety, with few possessions and very little food.

Villagers in Liberia showed enormous compassion in welcoming the refugees, but they struggled to cope with the sheer number of new arrivals.

The fifteen members of the United Nations Security Council delegation co-led by Ambassador Susan Rice of the United States of America and Ambassador Mohammed Loulichki of Morocco were in Zwedru, the capital of Grand Gedeh County, to meet Ivorian refugees at the Primier Timber Production Company (PTP) refugee camp. The Ambassadors flew in from Guiglo on the Côte d’Ivoire side of the border.

The recent trends in the West African sub-region display various contradictions. On the one hand, certain political and economic developments give reason for optimism. On the other hand, new and very serious threats have emerged over the last years which – if not addressed adequately – could undercut gains made and erode stability and security in the whole region. On the positive side, economic growth rates have been promising, and elections have become well established as the only legitimate way of changing the government.
