IFRC — more than 1,000 found

Summary: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 hit the western part of Bulgaria on 22nd May early in the morning. The epicentre of the earthquake was registered near the town of Pernik also affecting the country’s capital Sofia.

All responsible services from the Joint Rescue System in the Republic of Bulgaria were activated and deployed immediately to the affected area to provide support to the population. National media started broadcasting news about the event and its consequences.

A magnitude-5.9 earthquake struck north-eastern Italy early in the morning of Sunday 20 May, killing at least seven people, injuring 50 and toppling several buildings. The quake struck at 4:04 am between Modena and Mantua, about 35 kilometres north-northwest of Bologna at a relatively shallow depth of five kilometres. The epicentre was between the towns of Finale Emilia, San Felice sul Panaro and Sermide, but was felt as far away as Tuscany and northern Alto Adige.

Habsatou Abdulaye, 53, lives in Niaptana – one of many communities in Burkina Faso which regularly face food crises and where the Red Cross has helped women establish vegetable gardens, which provide a valuable source of nutrition.

Habsatou, who has eight children and is president of the Sandari vegetable garden group, says: “It’s a good programme that is working according to our needs. Thanks to the Red Cross we have this land here, which was not possible before.

CHF 286,454 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 3,500 beneficiaries (700 families). Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters.

Summary: CHF 261,008 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on September 2011 to support the Red Cross Society of Guinea in delivering assistance to some 1,500 households.

CHF 138,467 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan in delivering immediate assistance to some 558 households (3,348 beneficiaries) in the forms of distributing non-food items and providing psychosocial support to these families. The National Society is planning to replenish the items that were already distributed.
Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Burkina Faso

Gazing across the sandy expanse of the playground, the buildings of the middle school have a forlorn look and give the impression of being completely deserted – until through the window of one faraway building, we catch sight of a few human figures moving about.

“The students in there are just finishing their lunch,” explains the principal, Toshihiko Takahama, from his office at the front of the building. They seem a very small group. “Before the disaster, we had 60 students, but only 14 have come back so far,” Mr Takahama says.

The Italian Red Cross, with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has determined that external assistance is not required, and is therefore not seeking funding or other assistance from donors at this time.

Summary: 27,516 Swiss francs were allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 11 October 2011 to support the Dominica Red Cross Society (DRCS) in delivering assistance to up to 79 families (approximately 395 persons).

Summary: CHF 71,014 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 31 August 2011 to support the Bahamas Red Cross Society in delivering assistance to some 1,000 beneficiaries affected by Hurricane Irene.

Summary: CHF 275’993 was officially allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 9 February 2012 to support the Malawi Red Cross Society in delivering immediate assistance to 6,159 beneficiaries. Un earmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.
