I. PRIORIDADES / PUNTOS DESTACADOS

• Más de 420 personas (96 familias) de zona rural del municipio de Roberto Payán se desplazaron al casco urbano por hostigamientos.

• Más de 350 niños, tanto de la población desplazada como de la comunidad receptora, están fuera de la escuela por la suspensión de actividades escolares.

• La población en situación de desplazamiento se encuentra hacinada en las instalaciones de una escuela y en precarias condiciones de saneamiento.

  1. According to the PDMC meeting held on 23 May, there is likely to be another flash floods on Saturday 26 May following the weather forecast which indicate heavy rain fall in Sari Pul and the neighbouring highland areas.

Poor long rains in parts of the pastoral areas moderating improvements in food security

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Retail prices of most food commodities monitored in various markets show a normal fluctuation over the past one month, which is an indication of normal functioning of markets across the country.

  • As per the latest report released by Nepal Rastra Bank, the year-on-year (y-o-y) inflation remained at 7.0 percent in mid-March 2012, while the price index of food & beverage increased only by 4.2 percent as compared to 17.3 percent in the same period last year.

Highlights

• In February 2012, the country level general inflation based on 12 months moving average stood at 17.33 percent and food inflation stood at 14.03 percent.

• Currently the whole sale prices of wheat flour and wheat grain stood at 5000 YR/50kg and 4,050 YR/50kg, respectively.

Highlights

  • The ban of border trade with South Sudan and exemption taxses in food items by State authorities in North Darfur has positively activated the markets, cereal prices in the third week of April is stablized or started to decline slightly in an unexpected pattern at this time of the year.

  • A sudden rush/flow in of cereals from central Sudan has enhanced availability and restrained increasing price trend that started since the beginning of this year.

Food purchasing power of households worsened in rural areas for the first time this year, but remained stable in urban households.

  • The year-on-year overall country level inflation and food inflation rate increased by 29.84% and 36.64%. Cereal inflation rate rose by 45.8%.

  • Local maize and wheat price at Addis Ababa stood below the import parity respectively by 45% and 6%. However, sorghum stood above the import parity by 24%.

Résumé

Le Mali, comme la plupart des pays du Sahel, est cette année encore, touché par une crise Alimentaire due à une sècheresse prolongée qui affecte directement 3,5 millions de personnes réparties dans 210 communes. Cette situation se combine à une crise politique laissant le pays divisé. Le fait que de nombreuses personnes soient réfugiées et déplacées sur un vaste territoire complexifie la réponse à apporter par les agences et organisations humanitaires.

This update provides a snapshot of the inter-agency response to the influx of Syrians into Lebanon. The response is undertaken in full coordination with the Government of Lebanon.

Highlights of the week

Numbers

No significant change in numbers from last week. Currently over 26,000 displaced Syrians are being assisted throughout the country.

Registration

Registration in the North this week was disrupted by the events in Tripoli but continued in Akkar where 590 persons were registered. As a result 13,203 are now registered.

Summary: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 hit the western part of Bulgaria on 22nd May early in the morning. The epicentre of the earthquake was registered near the town of Pernik also affecting the country’s capital Sofia.

All responsible services from the Joint Rescue System in the Republic of Bulgaria were activated and deployed immediately to the affected area to provide support to the population. National media started broadcasting news about the event and its consequences.

CHF 286,454 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 3,500 beneficiaries (700 families). Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Referrals from Gaza: Summary for April 2012

  • Of the 1,338 referrals, 1,037 were destined to facilities outside the Gaza Strip, of which 741 required exit through Erez checkpoint. The majority of these (62%) were to Palestinian hospitals in the oPt.

  • Cholera in Chiredzi

  • 52 typhoid cases reported

  • 11 114 malaria cases and 7 deaths reported

A. General Context

Typhoid outbreak in Harare is still on-going since 10 October, 2011. The disease has spread to other provinces. However the weekly number of cases has declined.

A cholera outbreak has started in Chiredzi.

Malaria outbreak has been reported in Mudzi and seasonal increases in many districts.

Since 2007, a UNICEF-led working group has consolidated efforts to report on the impacts of armed conflict on children in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt). The bulletin is published on a bi-monthly basis highlighting trends and patterns in grave violations against children.

Members of the working group include: Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights, Save the Children, DCI-Palestine, B’Tselem, Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, War Child Holland, OCHA, OHCHR, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNRWA and WHO.

This edition covers January & February 2012.

Situation Overview

Heavy rains from 10th to 11th of May 2012 triggered mudflow in number of villages in Balkhobi and Tutu jamoats of Muminabad district. Several houses including cultivated land and household facilities have been severely damaged. The affected residents were relocated to their neighbors’ and relatives’ houses. The road within the jamoat has been damaged and travel capacity is limited.
