MAROUA, Cameroon (AlertNet) – Northern Cameroon’s renown as the bread basket of West and Central Africa is fading rapidly following a sharp drop in agricultural production due to harsh weather conditions.

The long absence of rain, which experts believe is linked to climate change, has caused poor harvests of food and cash crops in the country’s northern regions, significantly affecting commercial activities that are a major source of income for Cameroonians, as well as for their government through customs earnings.

DAKAR, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Some 120,000 people have been forced from their homes in Mali since Tuareg-led rebels launched an independence bid last month in the country's desert north, United Nations figures showed.

The conflict, which has seen rebels bolstered by fighters and weapons from Libya's conflict launch a wave of attacks on military outposts, comes as the Sahel region grapples with a food crisis that aid agencies say will leave more than 10 million hungry this year.

Tapping research outputs from international agricultural research centers could help national and state governments to tackle the twin problems of food insecurity and the rising wave of unemployment, says the Director General of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Dr. Nteranya Sanginga.

Faced with the challenge of food deficit, most governments in developing countries and especially Africa rely on food imports to meet local demands. Also the rising population in the region poses two important challenges: more mouths to feed and unemployment.

Up to 23 million people in Niger, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and some parts of Senegal are facing a food crisis. Erratic rainfall, droughts and insect infestations have led to poor harvests and could cause major malnutrition.

Malnutrition rates are generally high in the Sahel region, particularly affecting children under two. The peak of malnutrition rates will start to be seen from April. Unless action is taken now, over one million children under the age of five are likely to suffer from acute malnutrition.
