Sahel: Food Insecurity 2011-2012 — more than 1,000 found

FOREWORD

In 2011, millions of people in parts of the Horn of Africa faced the worst food-and-nutrition crises in a generation. For the first time in more than two decades, a famine was declared in Somalia. More than 13 million people desperately needed help, but the humanitarian community struggled to meet the massive needs. CERF played a played a major part in the early response to the crisis. It contributed more than US$126 million across the region, including $53 million to Somalia.

No stranger to the world of missions, Caroline has built up a wealth of experience in the field of humanitarian aid. After an initial posting in Haiti, where she worked on our schools health education project, she decided to specialise in this field and took a Masters in public health. In 2005, after completing her course, Caroline began her first mission in Mali, where she spent two years as the maternal health project manager. Conscious that Handicap International’s mission was making a difference, she decided to return to Mali as health coordinator in 2009.

The Netherlands has pledged nearly one million euros in extra emergency aid to curb the famine threat in the Sahel region. Ben Knapen, Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation, said today the money will go to the Red Cross to provide food aid in drought-plagued Burkina Faso and Chad.

The composition of one's diet is fundamental to good nutrition and health. And knowing what we eat is essential to dietetics and food science, as well as for biodiversity, agriculture production, and the food industry.

Norway is providing an additional NOK 40 million to assist the victims of the drought in the Sahel. "I have seen with my own eyes how important it is that help reaches those in need," commented Minister of International Development Heikki Holmås.

Press Release No:2012/474/SDN

Six Countries to Receive $177 Million to Increase Incomes, and Improve Food Security

WASHINGTON May 24, 2012 – Partners in the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP), a fund that supports country-led efforts to fight hunger and poverty, today announced that six countries will receive grants totaling $177 million. The grants – to Burundi, the Gambia, Kyrgyz Republic, Malawi, Senegal, and Tanzania – will help each country increase food security, raise rural incomes, and reduce poverty.

Aid agencies have warned that the West African country of Niger will fall into famine unless the world takes immediate action.

More than 15 million people across West Africa are affected by a hunger crisis. Agencies have been pleading for early intervention in the land-locked region of Niger for six months.

But as previous famines show, help usually arrives late, and only after the world has been shocked by pictures of starving children.

Denise Brown from the World Food Program fears mass starvation is now inevitable.
