Yemen – Conflict (ECHO, UN, Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 4 February 2016)

  • Fighting in Sana’a governorate continues with pro-Hadi forces claiming to have taken control of the strategic Nihm area amid intensified Saudi airstrikes. With forces advancing towards the capital, president Hadi has reportedly vowed that military operations will continue until Sana’a is liberated.
  • On 3 February, an airstrike targeted a cement factory in Amran, reportedly killing 15 civilian workers in neighboring businesses. Several food processing factories have also been targeted in Sana’a city.
  • The presence of humanitarian actors in Yemen is expanding in response to the increased needs with 106 agencies currently part of the cluster response. The largest presence of humanitarian agencies is reported in Aden, followed by Sana’a and Taiz. International presence in also increasing with over 200 UN and INGO expatriate staff reportedly in country.
  • According to the nutrition cluster, in 2015 a total of 2 106 health facilities were providing Out Patient Therapeutic Program (OTP) services and 113 mobile clinics were operating. Since the start of the conflict, 159 414 children have received Severe Acute Malnourishment (SAM) treatment.
  • UNHCR launched on 2 February a USD 172.2 million Supplementary Appeal for Yemen including USD 115.5 million in additional requirements, for the period January - December 2016. The appeal outlines UNHCR response for refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced people (IDPs) needs in Yemen, as well as for refugees fleeing Yemen to the East and Horn of Africa and the Middle East and North Africa. As of 1 January 2016, approximately 170 000 people left Yemen towards neighbouring countries (39 880 to Saudi Arabia, 31 584 to Djibouti, 30 202 to Somalia, 11 397 to Ethiopia and 5 800 to Sudan).
