Sana’a, 07 April 2016 – The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has welcomed a contribution of US$ 3.5 million from the Government of Japan towards its activities supporting refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons in Yemen.

Johannes van der Klaauw, the UNHCR Representative in Yemen, expressed his deep gratitude saying “we would like to extend our appreciation to the people and the Government of Japan, who have shown significant and consistent support to our efforts in providing protection and assistance to people in need in Yemen over the years.”

The funds will be used to improve living conditions of the 18,000 residents in Kharaz refugee camp through shelter rehabilitation activities and health care, including comprehensive Safe Motherhood Services. It will enable UNHCR to provide life-saving assistance to some 40,000 persons from the Horn of Africa, landing along the Red Sea and Arabian Sea coasts. UNHCR will also deliver emergency relief items to 10,000 internally displaced families and reach 12,000 individuals through in-depth protection monitoring.

“This contribution is an expression of the longstanding commitment of the Government and the people of Japan to support the population of Yemen, including the most vulnerable among them, notably 2.4 million internally displaced Yemenis and over 270,000 refugees which Yemen has been hosting for many years,” said Ambassador of Japan Mr Katsuyoshi Hayashi.

Conflict in Yemen has escalated significantly since March 2015 and has spread to 21 of Yemen’s 22 governorates. It is estimated that more than 21 million people – over 80 per cent of the total population - need some form of humanitarian assistance. Since 2010, the Government of Japan has contributed over US$ 26 million to the UNHCR operation in Yemen.
