World Humanitarian Day is an opportunity for Oxfam to celebrate our humanitarian staff and partners and the communities they work with.
Jane Cocking, Oxfam's humanitarian director, is representing Oxfam at a memorial service at Westminster Abbey to mark the day. Speaking about the current emergencies around the world, Jane said:
"The role of humanitarian agencies is keeping people - and hope - alive. It is also about getting them back on their feet. This is becoming more and more difficult while we wait for the politics of these crises to get sorted out.
"There has never been a greater need for us to work with local partners and find long-term solutions to the problems."
To mark World Humanitarian Day 2014, we've asked some of Oxfam's own humanitarian staff to share their experiences from places like Gaza, South Sudan and Liberia as well as hearing about how good evidence can improve emergency response and how market analysis can support vulnerable communities before the crisis hits. We've also pulled together a selection of our hands-on guides for humanitarian practitioners, from technical guides to water and sanitation operations to what to do in a cholera outbreak and programme evaluation in fragile contexts.
