A. Situation analysis Latest developments

The countries of Europe continue to search for solution to the migration flow that has resulted in more than 3,000 deaths in the past two years, mainly at sea, in the Mediterranean Basin. The flood of migrants and refugees, the largest movement of people Europe has seen since 1945, has raised doubt about open borders and provoked a dispute over sharing the burdens.

Border regulations introduced by countries along the Western Balkans route in February 2016 coupled with the European Union (EU) -Turkey agreements reached on 18 March, have resulted in thousands of vulnerable migrants stranded in different countries, and often waiting in camps with substandard conditions.
