The Desert Locust situation continued to remain calm during January. Small-scale breeding occurred in parts of southest Algeria, southwest Libya and northern Niger. Limited ground control operations were carried out in Algeria. Very few locusts were present in the winter breeding areas along both sides of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden because of poor rainfall and dry vegetation.
