Contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

  1. On Friday, May 20, the Government of Japan decided to contribute 800 million US dollars in the coming years. This pledge is for the 5th Replenishment of the Global Fund.

  2. Japan introduced infectious diseases as an important agenda for the first time in G7/8 Summit history in Kyushu-Okinawa Summit in 2000, and it paved the path to the establishment of the Global Fund in 2002. Since then, the Global Fund has saved more than 17 million lives from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria while strongly supporting health system strengthening. However, even today, more than three millions of lives are lost, mostly people in developing countries, due to the three major infectious diseases, and affected countries are facing serious loss of lives and experience economic influence.

  3. This year, Ise-Shima Summit, as the first G7 Summit after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, will take up health as that is an important element of SDGs, and shed light on infectious disease control and health system strengthening towards promoting Universal Health Coverage. As the G7 presidency, Japan intends to continue to contribute to three infectious diseases control and health system strengthening through the Global Fund.
