2007 Global Trends: Refugees, Asylum-seekers, Returnees, Internally Displaced and Stateless Persons
This document presents an overview of global
levels and trends for each of the seven categories constituting the total
population of concern to UNHCR. It also analyses trends related to new
displacement, either in the form of massive outflows or of people having
sought international protection on an individual basis. Finding durable
solutions for those who have sought international protection is central
to UNHCR's mandate and therefore integral to this report. Information
on the demographic composition of the population falling under UNHCR's
responsibility, crucial for all planning and programming activities, also
features in this document.
This report is limited to populations for whom UNHCR has a mandate, and therefore does not pretend to provide a comprehensive picture of global forced displacement. For example, some 4.6 million Palestinian refugees who fall under the mandate of UNRWA are not included in the analysis. Likewise, the report only covers IDPs generated by conflict and who benefited directly or indirectly from UNHCR's protection and assistance activities, in particular as part of the collective response to help IDPs through the Cluster Approach.
