VIET NAM TYPHOON IRVING
UNDRO SITUATION REPORT NO. 1
4 AUGUST 1989

1. UNDP/UNDRO REPRESENTATIVE REPORTED THAT ON 24/07 TYPHOON
'IRVING' ACCOMPANIED BY WHIRLWINDS AND TORRENTIAL RAINS
(200-423 MM RAINFALL RECORDED IN 10 CONSECUTIVE HOURS) HIT FOUR
DISTRICTS OF THANH HOA PROVINCE.

2. ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL REPORT, DAMAGE CAUSED BY TYPHOON AND
FLOODS AS FOLLOWS:

- 104 DEAD, 491 INJURED
- 89,000 HOUSES COLLAPSED, OVER 200,000 ROOFLESS, 87 HOSPITALS
AND HEALTH CENTERS COLLAPSED
- 100,000 HA CROP LAND DESTROYED/SUBMURGED UNDER WATER
- 96 CANALS DESTROYED, 1,785,000 CBM. IRRIGATION EARTH/STONES
WASHED AWAY
- 361 HIGH VOLTAGE POLES AND 1,815 TELEPHONE POLES COLLAPSED
- 263 FISHING BOATS SUNK, 387 DAMAGED

3. GOVERNMENT INDICATED SPONTANEOUS ASSISTANCE FROM GOVERMENTS,
AGENCIES AND NGOS ARE WELCOME.
