Venezuela below FAO hunger statistics

Caracas, 19 Dic. AVN.- Venezuela is located below statistics of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) about hungry people in Latin America and the Caribbean.

President of the program of strategic food Fundaproal, Zoraida Ramirez, said the information Thursday and she detailed that there are still 7.9 per cent of hungry citizens in Latin America and the Caribbean and 2.5 per cent in Venezuela.

"We are below statistics. It means that the political will carrying out Food Mission was successful and we continue working for it," she said in an interview in local television on Thursday morning.

That group of people who are still hungry must be fed before 2019, said Ramirez, adding that "the Millennium Goals must be met, which is hunger zero."

Fundaproal has been a valid strategy and recognized by FAO, she added. Also, its labor has been highlighted as program of solidarity.

"Fundaproal started in 2004 and free meal centers in 2005. Extreme poverty decreased by 14 points between 2004 and 2005. It means they were really important," Ramirez said.

In order to continue decreasing hungry, Fundaproal is going to foster training centers of nutrition culture in 2014, starting from January 20th.

The new program would start with 150 food centers as pilot plan, in which people will be trained in matters of nutrition.

"This program will feed all those people who are hungry and live in extreme poverty... We are going to educate them nutritionally and boost changes of patterns in matters of food consumption. It's necessary for the country," she added.

As a matter of fact, the Fundaproal president said there are 4,275 food centers; the number of centers was bigger but it decreased because there are less hungry people in the country.
