Vanuatu, Solomon Islands – Tropical Cyclone Eighteen (GDACS, JTWC, VMGD, RSMC) (ECHO Daily Flash of 3 May 2017)

  • A new Tropical Cyclone formed over the Southwestern Pacific Ocean close to Solomon islands on 2 May and started moving east-southeast as a Tropical Storm. On 3 May at 6.00 UTC it center was located approx. 480 km north-east of Sola city (Vanua Lava island, Torba province, Vanuatu) and it had max. sustained winds speed of 93 km/h (Tropical Storm).
  • Over the next 24 h, it is forecast to strengthen and it may start approaching the Northern Vanuatu group of islands. Heavy rain and strong winds may affect the north and central areas of the country over 5-7 May. A red alert was issued in GDACS for the late afternoon of 5 May and until the morning of 6 May.
  • Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department, as of 3 May at 8.00 UTC, reported that a warning for severe weather and flash floods is in effect over Northern and Central Vanuatu group of islands.
