Thousands of Congolese refugees cross into Uganda through Koboko

An estimated 10,000 refugees have crossed into Koboko district from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Partners working with Office of Prime minister that include Uganda Red Cross, Koboko District authorities, UNHCR, among others on Monday met in Koboko to discuss the fate of the refugees.

According to URCS Arua Branch Manager Yona Ukoku, the teams conducted a joint assessment and visited two areas which will act as transit centres for the refuges. The areas are Lolo, formerly used by BAT tobacco buying centre but currently empty and Midia Youth Centre.

Registration of the refugees has not commenced yet but the teams have resolved that all refugees should go to Lolo or Midia to enable government and its partners provide joint relief support.

Ukoku said Lolo has one big ware house, 1 protected spring and two stance latrines while Midia centre has training facilities with 3 toilets of 2 stances each. The partners have agreed to improve on the conditions to enable the refugees occupy the places.
