Impassable roads hindering relief distribution in Kaabong

Kaboong District has requested the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) to transport and distribute food delivered by Office of Prime Minister to Morulem village, Kawalakol Sub County where a landslide occurred killing seven people.

Two URCS P380 6x4 commercial heavy trucks are already at Kaboong headquarters and have loaded the food, ready to transport and distribute it to the survivors. However the muddy and impassable roads are hindering the distribution process. The trucks are finding it difficult to go up the rocks in the area. Heavy rains coupled with floods are being experienced in the area. 26 families whose houses were destroyed by the mudslides have been temporary been relocated to Kawalakol Primary School. MSF Spain has provided two tents to accommodate the families.

The Uganda Red Cross Society in a District Disaster Management Committee appealed for further re-location of the remaining inhabitants in Kawalakol to avoid further catastrophe.

On Thursday last week, URCS received food from World Food Programme which was distributed to the affected families by the Red Cross volunteers. The Red Cross also distributed essential household items to the survivors including 20 blankets, 17 cooking pots, 120 plates, 30 jerrycans and 4 cartoons of soap.

In Bududa, the 6 people injured in a mudslide in Bumwalukani, Bulucheke are still admited at Bududa Hospital. URCS has distributed essential household items like blankets, basins, soap and jerrycans to the injured. Plans are underway by the Office of the Prime Minister to re-locate the 42 households that need urgent relocation.
