Highlights

  • More than 50 per cent of 1,130 affected buildings in Ha’apai have been destroyed, with a further 34 per cent having major damage

  • Of the 17 primary and secondary schools affected in Ha’apai, 13 have major damage.

  • Immediate challenge is logistics to distribute relief and recovery items to outer islands, as well as within affected areas.

  • The Government continues to manage the response without a call for formal international assistance. Bilateral assistance has been accepted from NZ, Australia, OCHA, IFRC. Other countries have offered to provide relief items.

  • The UN Resident Coordinator, on behalf of the Pacific Humanitarian Team, submitted a formal offer of support to the Prime Minister of Tonga.
