Tahiti approves US$770,000 Tonga aid package

21 JANUARY 2002 PAPE'ETE (Pacnews) -- The Assembly of French Polynesia has approved a US$770,000 aid package for the Kingdom of Tonga to assist the country's recovery from Cyclone Waka.

A team of three experts and technicians made their recommendations to the government after returning late last week from a fact-finding mission to Tonga Gaston Flosse, French Polynesia's President, said Tahiti will send US$154,000 worth of food aid and "loggers" from Tahiti's Department for Rescue Operations. Part of the aid package will be used to rebuild schools hit by the hurricane. All the equipment will be shipped to Tonga on the country's "Tahiti Nui" vessel.
