Thailand: The government of Japan provides assistance for flood victims in Laplae district, Uttaradit province

The Government of Japan is extending Grant Assistance for the Grassroots Human Security Projects Scheme (GGP) to the "Water Supply System Reconstruction in Laplae District" project, coordinated by the Laplae District Office. Mr. Jun Niimi, Minister of the Embassy of Japan, and Mr. Bunyat Pongsaikul, Chief of the Laplae District, signed the contract on January 8, 2007 at the Uttaradit Provincial Office.

Floods and mudslides caused by the heavy rain in Uttaradit province of northern Thailand from May 22 to 23, 2006 resulted in 55,323 victims in Laplae district (98% of the population). 27 deaths (including 4 missing) and 215 destroyed houses were reported. Especially in Mae Phun sub-district and Fai Luang sub-district in Laplae, although temporary water tanks were installed when the water supply systems were dameged, the water volume is insufficient and the villagers are suffering from this.

At the request of the Laplae District Office, the Government of Japan is providing grants for the construction of water supply systems to three villages in Mae Phun sub-district and two villages in Fai Luang sub-district. The total grant assistance amounts to 12,117,100 baht.

Through this grant, 4,524 villagers in 5 villages will be guaranteed adequate safe water. Water will be also supplied to neighboring villages.

The project was funded through the Japanese Government's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Scheme (GGP), one type of Official Development Assistance (ODA). Under the GGP scheme, the Japanese Government provides direct support for social and economic development activities implemented by NGOs, local authorities, and medical institutes. More than 270 projects in Thailand, amounting to over 650?million baht, have been implemented since the scheme's inception in 1989.

The Japanese Government is ready to consider providing further support to projects which benefit human security through the GGP scheme.
