Thailand: Education Minister instructs authorities to examine flood affected schools in the South

  • Education Minister Jurin Laksanawisit instructed related parties to examine damages of flood-affected schools in the South.

The Education Minister said that the investigation of damaged schools from flooding in South was being carried out. Recent heavy downpours in the South caused flash floods in the areas with 300 schools affected, but some schools had already been able to arrange classes. Most of the severely damaged schools from floods were in Songkhla Province. The Minister vowed to speed up the rehabilitation and that classes would be offered at the soonest oppertunity. The assistance fund was already provided in each area.

According to the report, flood affected schools in seven southern provinces, with 314 closed including 25 in Narathiwat, 14 in Pattani, 222 in Songkhla, 37 in Yala, 3 in Trang, 8 in Phatthalung, and 5 in Satun.

Meanwhile, Mr Jurin added that the assistance for cold weather victims nationwide had been given as cloths and blankets donated by the public. He also instructed vocational schools to weave 20,000 blankets which would be passed to school children in affected areas accordingly.
