UNAMID support schools in Central and South Darfur

In an effort to support and contribute to a continuous learning process, the UNAMID team in Zalingei, Central Darfur, on 1 July, presented educational materials including chairs and desks to the Hassa Hissa and Hamidia camps for displaced persons.

In the Hassa Hissa camp, the team presented 36 chairs and 24 tables to six schools. Additionally, 20 classroom benches and 20 chairs were handed over to Auyour Barakat and Ibn Sina basic schools in the Hamidia camp.

Representing UNAMID’s Communications and Public Information Section (CPIS), Mr. Kone Mouroulaye reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to support education in Darfur and emphasized the importance of supporting teachers in the region.

Receiving the items on behalf of the displaced community, Mr. Haroun, Sheikh of Sheikhs and Teachers representative, Hamidia camp, expressed their gratitude to the Mission’s support for the school supplies.

Also on 1 July, two classrooms and one office building constructed as part of the Mission’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) were handed over to Shadida village basic school in South Darfur. Like other similar projects, this initiative aims to increase school enrolment, reduce dropouts and create an enabling environment for students to complete their education.

Speaking on behalf of UNAMID Head of Office, Mr. Harish Joshi said that the impact of the decade-long conflict in the region is evident on the social and economic lives of the people of Darfur. He stressed the importance of providing education for all children--boys and girls--to ensure a brighter future for Darfuri youth. “Girls and boys should not be forced out of school to marry or to join armed movements. Parents and the entire community, as a whole, play a pivotal role in ensuring that children receive proper education,” he added.
