Sudan, a country of 36.2 million people has been gripped by conflict for most of the past 50 years. The majority of this conflict is the result of the hostility between the mainly Muslim north and the animist and Christian south. The most recent phase of the conflict has cost close to two million lives and concluded with a peace deal signed in January 2005. During the time of the peace talks between the two major parties, conflict broke out in the western Darfur region in 2003 that has resulted in 180,000 deaths. More than two million people have been displaced, creating what the U.N. has described as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
The Khartoum University Clinic serves an estimated 20,000 people each year, the majority of whom are students attending the Khartoum University and farming families from the surrounding community. Primary health concerns seen at the hospital include malaria, typhoid, upper respiratory infections, and traumatic injuries from traffic and farming accidents. The clinic is staffed by eight physicians, four midwives and 30 nurses and provides primary care, family planning, gynecology, minor surgery, and delivery services.
The second Direct Relief consignment to Khartoum University Medical Clinic contained analgesics and vitamins, surgical and orthopedic supplies as well as other medical supply consumables, and equipment items such as wheelchairs and pulse oximeters. We would like to thank Tri-anim, Mentor Corporation, and Alkermes, Inc for donating their products to this shipment.
