RCA to rush urgent supplies to Sudan's floods victims

A delegation from the UAE Red Crescent Authority will fly to Sudan in the coming couple of days to deliver urgent relief supplies to victims of flash floods that swept several parts in Sudan and population affected by events in western region of Darfur.

RCA Board Chairman Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi said the assistance to Sudan were in response to instructions by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and follow up of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and RCA Chairman.

The RCA, he said, had prepared a massive relief programme to provide a diverse package of urgent relief assistance including foodstuff, medical supplies and tents for the affected and homeless population. 'While in Sudan, the RCA team will oversee the relief operations and tour disaster-hit regions to assess the magnitude of damage and their real requirements,' he added.

He disclosed that the RCA had received several humanitarian appeals for aid from Sudanese concerned authorities including Sudanese Red Crescent and international relief organisation.

For swift delivery of assistance, he explained that part of relief supplies would be secured from local markets in Sudan. He indicated that the most hit regions by floods were the Provinces of Khartoum, White Nile, Gezira and Kordofan.

According to him, powerful rains had wrecked havoc to eastern parts of the capital Khartoum where floods had washed away a number of villages. 'The homeless villagers are living in a dire humanitarian condition,' he added, affirming that the RCA would spare no effort to alleviate suffering of affected people. 'We are aware of the huge devastation caused by the disaster in Sudan and therefore our relief programme will be very extensive to measure up to the event,' he concluded. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
