Sri Lanka: Landslides causes heavy damages - Air Force in rescue missions
The Sri Lankan Air Force rescue teams evacuated thousands of people trapped in some villages as several areas were unreachable by land route due to landslides. Air Force spokesperson Group Captain Ajantha Silva said receiving the information on these troubled rescue missions, the Air Force arranged two helicopters from Hingurakgoda and one from Colombo to rescue trapped people.
According to reports 13,000 people were marooned.
The Disaster Management Centre added that floods reported from Hambantota, Lunugamvehera and Tissamaharama areas in the Southern parts of the island have displaced more than 11,000 people.
Under the instructions of Livestock and Infrastructure Development Minister C.B. Ratnayake, a special operation unit has also been established to assist the displaced people.
The Human Rights and Disaster Management Ministry has taken necessary steps to provide relief to the affected and release funds to provide immediate assistance for the displaced, ministry sources informed.
