South Sudan – Uganda demarcation committee consults with border communities

A joint border committee formed to resolve a border dispute between South Sudan and Uganda has started consultative meetings with communities.

The consultations which begun on Monday will be followed by a process of border demarcation spearheaded by a team of surveyors in the presence of an 18 man-committee with representatives from both Uganda and South Sudan.

Uganda’s state Minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Okello Oryem, explained that the demarcation exercise will be conducted mainly in the violence prone areas of the border between Uganda and South Sudan.

The committee on Monday visited Pogee, a village in Magwi County bordering Uganda’s Lamwo district. While there, they explained their mandate and asked for the people’s cooperation.

The team is tasked with marking the borders and demarcating boundaries. Ochan Robert, the community chairperson in Pogee village says the team was welcomed by the people.

“We are happy because finally we are seeing the light and the meeting of yesterday was fruitful and could at least sense that and feel that this issue can be resolved.”
