Highlights

· Today is World Food Day. Join WFP in its Zero Hunger challenge. WFP is fully committed to the United Nation’s Global Goals. One of those 17 goals is to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. In honor of World Food Day we encourage you to join the campaign on Facebook and Twitter, spread the word in your community and challenge your elected officials to effect change.

· WFP reaches approximately 1.36 million people with just under 16,000 mt of food in September. Through its Emergency Operation, 695,000 people were served with nearly 9,500 mt of WFP assistance. About 666,000 people were reached with more than 6,500 mt of food through various activities under WFP’s Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation.

· New WFP assessments available online. The latest WFP South Sudan Market Price Monitoring Bulletin (September 2015) and the most recent South Sudan Monthly Seasonal Monitor (October 2015) have been published electronically. The latter details the 2015 growing season in-country, which began well with early favourable rainfall and timely (or even earlier than average) planting in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region, most of Western Equatoria and parts of Upper Nile. Dry spells extending across Jonglei, Eastern and Central Equatoria from July to September though will likely have a negative impact on the second agriculture season. Beyond that, El Niño (officially ongoing since March 2015) will likely remain active throughout 2015 and extend into the first quarter of 2016 and have both beneficial and adverse effects in the East African region. The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, which will give projections of food security for the next six months, is with Government for final clearance and is expected be released next week.
