Situation Update

The security situation in Wau has been affected by the conflict in Juba. There has been tension in town and movement out of town is suspended. IOM has established a stronger operational presence and is responding to the rapidly increasing populations at the UNMISS base and Cathedral.

CCCM

IOM is UNMISS site manager and State Focal Point. The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) team carried out head counts at the UNMISS base and Cathedral and will do rapid surveys of place of origin and intentions. To accommodate the increasing populations, by the UNMISS base a 55,000sqm area has been fenced off and site improvement works have started. IOM WASH is installing the water system, and constructing latrines. The site includes shelters, a road network, a health clinic and contingency space.

Health

IOM provided medical consultations and reproductive health services at the SSRC, the Cathedral and in Ngisa when security permitted. A mass measles vaccination campaign was performed and 2,627 children at the Cathedral and 1,344 at the SSRC clinic vaccinated against measles. A tent is set up at the Cathedral as a maternity ward, and discussions are underway for a similar space at the SSRC. Next week’s priorities include identifying and training health promoters, establishing an EPI team at the entrances to collective centres for measles vaccination, and a mobile clinic in Nazareth.

PSS

Psychological First Aid (PFA) training was held for 41 participants: IOM PSS (20), IOM medical (5), UNICEF (12), IMC (91), and SSRC (3). At the UNMISS site, a tent has been erected for counselors to work in. This week the counsellor and support team handled 30 cases of psychosocial distress, including 12 deaths of close relatives and 11 of family separation. Four individuals were referred to the IMC clinic for treatment. MHPSS messaging from community mobilisers is ongoing by the UNMISS site, SSRC and the Cathedral.

WASH

At the UNMISS site, IOM are providing 2,492,000lts of water. The two T-45 tanks have increased the water storage capacity, which is now at 185,000lts. A 2,000lts per minute capacity water pump is now installed also. Water treatment with chlorine and FRC testing are ongoing. IOM constructed 34 latrines and have handed them to Oxfam for operation and maintenance. Outside town, the team in Ngisa rehabilitated four boreholes and promoted safe water chain awareness. An early June WASH assessment had noted critical WASH needs outside of town, which are exacerbated by the new levels of displacement.

SHELTER/NFI

Cluster lead IOM is co-ordinating assessments and distributions, with help from the Logistics Cluster. The first S-NFI cluster meeting was held with IOM, WFP, UNICEF, UNHCR and NRC with needs outside Wau town were discussed. IOM and ACTED are planning communal shelter arrangements in the Cathedral. At the new extension area by UNMISS, IOM and NRC will construct communal shelters. NFIs have been distributed to 4,180HH at the UNMISS site, and an assessment conducted for 1,000 new arrivals. At the Cathedral 2,615HH are targeted for NFI distribution in the coming week, and at Nazarat, a rapid needs assessment identified 200 households in need of NFI kits. Outside Wau, needs assessments and distributions were conducted in Mboro and Ngisa for 1,016 and 1,393 households
