Highlights

•Camp management conducts population count at UN House PoC site

•IOM improves access to water in Wau south

•More than 80,200 people remain displaced in Wau

IOM teams continue humanitarian activities across South Sudan, where more than 6.1 million people are in need of assistance. Since December 2013, the crisis has displaced 2.3 million people, including 751,400 who have fled to neighbouring countries and more than 1.61 million others who remain internally displaced.

Following fighting in late June, humanitarian needs remain high in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal, where more than 80,200 people have been displaced. An estimated 23,500 people are sheltering at the protection of civilians (PoC) site located adjacent to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) base in Wau. IDPs continue to arrive at the Wau PoC site each week due to insecurity; however, the number of new arrivals is declining.

While humanitarian access to affected populations outside of Wau has been limited since July, IOM water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) teams traveled to Wau south to rehabilitate seven boreholes to improve access to safe drinking water for displaced and conflict-affected families.

An estimated 12,500 people remain displaced in Juba due to the fighting that broke out in July. To improve delivery of services and facilitate movements from Tongping to UN House, IOM and camp coordination and camp management (CCCM) partners ACTED and UNHCR led a population count at the UN House PoC site on 13 August, identifying more than 37,200 IDPs. On 18 August, IOM conducted a registration at the UNMISS Tongping base, registering 3,022 people. The population count and registration help inform humanitarian assistance planning and provide accurate figures for distributions.

Cholera transmission in Juba has stabilized over the past three weeks, and the outbreak has been contained to Juba, Terekeka and Duk, according to the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization. Active transmission is currently limited to Juba. As of 18 August, health facilities had reported more than 1,236 cases of cholera, with 23 deaths.

IOM health and WASH teams continue to support the cholera response in Juba and cholera prevention in displacement sites across the country.
