Hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese received food in 2016

Renewed violence in 2016 severely affected the lives of thousands in South Sudan. Many people lost their lives, while others were forced to flee from their homes, leaving everything behind and often losing contacts with their loved ones.

The ICRC responded by delivering food, basic items and providing safe drinking water to thousands. We distributed seeds, tools, and fishing kits, and vaccinated livestock to help vulnerable communities. Our teams also conducted regular visits to thousands of detainees to monitor the conditions of their detention.

Highlights of our work in South Sudan in 2016.

  • 950,000 food rations distributed to people in need
  • Nearly 234,000 people received seeds and tools for farming
  • 793,000 livestock were vaccinated, benefitting 167,000 people
  • Conducted more than 143,000 outpatient consultations
