Celebrating World Toilet Day in South Sudan

World Toilet Day, which is celebrated every year on the 19 December, is an opportunity to inspire action and underscore the urgency needed to end open defecation, especially for women and girls who are particularly vulnerable. As the main provider of sanitation facilities in Gendrassa and Kaya refugee camps in Maban, Upper Nile State, ACTED celebrated World Toilet Day with a ‘learn from your neighbour’ theme. The day’s celebrations were held in the areas of the camps that had the cleanest and best maintained latrines.

Dramas, songs, dances and prizes

ACTED’s School Hygiene Ambassadors presented dramas, songs and dances, and speeches were made by the community leaders. Families with the cleanest family-shared latrines were awarded prizes, as well as the households that had already built their own individual latrine – an initiative ACTED has recently launched in the camps. According to one of the winners, the secret to a clean latrine simply lies in good time management and where cleaning responsibilities are equally shared between the family every day.
