AT A GLANCE

  • The total number of food insecure people in the Horn of Africa is still hovering around 9.95million people. The majority of those in need of humanitarian assistance are in Somalia (2.51 million – down slightly from June estimates).

  • Meteorologically, the drought situation in the Horn of Africa has eased. However, due to the delayed February to April rains combined with warmer than normal ocean temperatures from the previous presence of La Niña, drier than normal conditions will persist across much of the Horn through September, with the exception of the southern and western sections which are experiencing a reprieve.

  • Despite eased conditions, millions of people could return to emergency levels of hunger and malnutrition. The delay in rainfall, combined with the inability of many households to recover from 2011 drought conditions, has triggered a deterioration in food security in many parts of the Horn; especially in Somalia where major food assistance is unable to reach much of the population in a crisis and/or emergency situation due to ongoing conflict. Famine is still not anticipated even though the situation remains serious.

  • Dadaab refugee camp in Northern Kenya is facing a funding shortfall which could affect 200,000 people fleeing drought conditions and civil unrest. CARE International and other NGOs emphasize that any gaps in aid could affect security in the region.
