Portugal – Forest Fires Update (EFFIS, IPMA, Local Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 21 June 2017)

  • Forest fires continue to burn in the Central Region, mainly in the districts of Coimbra and Leiria. As of 21 June at 9.00 UTC two major forest fires are still active; one in Pedrogao Grande (Leiria district) and another in Gois (Coimbra district).
  • Local media reported, as of 21 June at 7.00 UTC, that 64 people have died and 150 people were injured in Leiria district over 18-19 June. Hundreds of people were evacuated in several villages of Gois municipality on 20 June.
  • According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the fire danger forecast risk is expected to remain "high" on 21 June and the total burnt area in Central Region has reached 32 000 ha, as of 21 June.
  • Over the next 24 hours, the forecast is for dry conditions, high temperatures, up to 37°C in Gois and up to 35°C in Pedrogao Grande and light to moderate winds for the area affected by forest fires.
