Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert F. Del Rosario signed and exchanged notes for two Grant Aid Projects amounting to 439 million yen (approximately 189 million pesos*) on June 30, 2014.

The signed projects contribute to enhancing education and health in the Philippines.

(1) Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) Project

This grant aid provides a fund amounting to 239 million yen (approximately 103 million pesos) to cover 20 JDS fellows, consisting of Filipino young officials from various governmental institutions, entering Japan starting Academic Year 2014-2015.

The project aims to enhance the JDS fellows' expertise in their respective fields such as "Good Governance", "Agriculture and Rural Development", "Financial Reform and Investment Promotion Policy" and "Peace and Stability in Mindanao" and to help build a pool of future Filipino leaders who will greatly contribute to the country's overall economic development by returning to and working in the Philippines. To date, the Philippines has a total of 239 JDS fellows.

(2) Non-Project Grant Aid for the Introduction of Japanese Advanced Products and its System (Medical Equipment and Welfare Apparatus Package for 2014)

This grant aid has a total budget of 200 million yen (approximately 86 million pesos) and is designed to provide Japanese medical equipment and welfare apparatus for public hospitals.

This project aims to contribute in improving health in the Philippines including Typhoon Yolanda affected areas, as well as support economic and social development in the country. This project also hopes to promote the Japanese medical services, which will benefit the well-being of the Filipino people.
