MANILA, August 19 (PIA) -- Thousands of families living in Old Sta. Mesa who were severly affected by the recent massive flooding caused by the southwest monsoon received assistance from the city government of Manila.

In a release, Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim together with barangay officials and employees, and non government organizations (NGOs) led the distribution of relief goods to families living in Barangays 594, 595, 596 and 597 in Sta. Mesa.

Barangay 597 Chairwoman Millete Quirante said that flood in their barangay was neck-deep causing residents, especially those in low-lying areas and along riverbanks to be trapped at the rooftops of their houses as floodwaters swelled along San Juan River.

The distribution of the relief goods is a joint project of six major Filipino-Chinese organizations including the Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce (FCCC) and the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII).

Meanwhile, Lim thanked NGO partners for their untiring commitment to continuously distribute thousands of bags of relief goods to families heavily affected by the calamity.

The local chief executive also thanked the barangay officials for their concern and dedication in helping their constituents, and for their effort in ensuring the smooth flow of the relief distribution. (MANILA-MEDIA BUREAU/RJB/JEG-PIA-NCR)
