Highlights

• The National Secretary for Emergency (SEN) requested WFP support in view of the increasing number of affected population.

• The level of the Parana’ river is increasing and already inundating the eastern part of the country

• The Itaipú dam (2nd biggest in the world) is discharging double amount of water than normal

• The waters of the river Parana’ are expected to raise 4 more meters

• The two biggest towns of Paraguay, Asunción and Ciudad del Este are being affected by the floods.

Situation Update

• Unusual and heavy rains have increased the water levels of the Yguazú and Paraná rivers, as well as the Yacyretá and Itaipú dams, increasing twice as much their flow volume and causing the flooding of large rural and urban areas affecting 31.837 families.

• 8 provinces have already declared Emergency Situation in their districts. • President Horacio Cartes has been coordinating with the SEN the emergency response.

• The national Army has already made available some areas in the city of Asunción for temporary shelters.
