Pakistan: Monsoon Update, Issue 05 - 17 August 2012

OVERVIEW

  • The Pakistan Meteorological Department has revised its rainfall forecast for August and September to 20 percent below the longterm average for the northern regions of the country and 40 percent below average for the southern regions.

  • The lower rainfall levels this year are attributed to the early onset of the El Nino phenomenon.

  • Water shortages in the south-west of Pakistan may adversely affect crop productivity and power generation.

  • A relatively strong monsoon spell is anticipated across the upper regions of Pakistan from 19 to 24 August.
