Pakistan: Monsoon Update, Issue 03 - 3 August 2012
This report identifies the curent trends, events, and short term forecast associated with the 2012 monsoon season.
OVERVIEW
The impact of the 2012 monsoon season rains has been well below normal.
High flood level alert for the Chenab River at Marala and at Khanki from 4-5 August, with inundation of low lying areas.
Weak monsoon rainfall is likely to have a negative impact on ‘kharif’ (summer) crop productivity.
River flows are normal except for the Kabul River which is in low / medium flood.
Water reservoir levels remain lower than the aggregated levels of the last five years.
Mild to moderate drought conditions persist along the Balochistan coast and in the southwestern region.
The monsoon forecast indicates reinforced activity by mid-August - districts likely to be affected by extreme monsoon events are indicated overleaf.
