ISLAMABAD [ACTED News] - Afghan refugees will be able to maintain their refugee status until 30 June 2013, according to a notification released by authorities at the end of January.

ACTED is currently providing selected Afghan women refugees and host community women in Kohat district, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with trainings to develop the necessary skills and means to establish their home-based livelihoods. As a result target refugee groups will develop income-generating activities both in Pakistan, enhancing their acceptance and reducing their reliance on host communities and aid actors, as well as in Afghanistan where many of them are expected to repatriate in the coming months.

Kohat district has seen a heavy influx of Afghan refugees over the last 30 years which has created serious competition for the limited livelihoods opportunities in the local economy.
