The Government of Japan decided on August
10 (Thu) to provide emergency assistance in kind (blankets, plastic sheets,
water purifiers and electric generators, etc.) equivalent to about 10 million
yen to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which sustained
a large-scale flood disaster.
Pakistan, mainly in North-West Frontier
Province, has been hit by disastrous flash floods and landslides caused
by continuous heavy rains from late July, leaving 296 people dead and 12,603
houses totally or partially destroyed (according to a UNDP report on August
9).
At present, evacuees are forced to lead a difficult life in wide-ranging areas of Pakistan and the Government of Pakistan, while conducting disaster relief operations of its own, has requested emergency assistance from Japan.
The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view to those afflicted by the disasters and taking account of the friendly relations between Japan and Pakistan.
