Summary

The present report contains findings and recommendations of the Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health (“right to health”) after his visit to the Syrian Arabic Republic from 7 to 14 November 2010, during which he visited Damascus, Aleppo and Al Hasakah.

The purpose of the mission was to examine how Syria endeavours to implement the right to health, the measures taken for its successful realization and the obstacles encountered both at the national and international level. The mission focused on issues relating to access to health care, particularly for vulnerable and marginalized groups as well as persons in detention: the Special Rapporteur also explored issues related to women's health including maternal health, family planning, and gender-based violence. The Special Rapporteur concludes the report with a set of recommendations concerning each of the areas considered throughout the mission.
