Executive summary

During the eight days of intensive airstrikes and shelling from land and sea the Palestine Red Crescent Society has been providing around the clock Emergency Medical Services across the Gaza strip, mobilizing 480 volunteers alongside its staff, and providing health support to the victims of the fighting.
Since before the end of hostilities, its volunteers and staff have been providing first aid, emergency non food items and psychosocial support to hundreds and hundreds of families in the Gaza strip, and since the truce agreed upon by the fighting parties on November 21 st , these services have been scaled up.
PRCS together with the ICRC has been conducting a field assessment for damaged or destroyed houses, extending its psychosocial services to more communities, providing health care for the injured, reaching out to the families of the injured.
The truce has brought a temporary suspension of the hostilities that raises hopes for the future. Even so, the situation remains extremely complicated due to the ongoing blockade of Gaza and the prevailing ongoing humanitarian consequences of these policies. While this appeal covers the immediate and longer term consequences of the eight days intensive hostilities, PRCS calls for partners not to forget that these consequences build on a pre-exiting highly complex humanitarian situation, and that the overall situation in Palestine oPt remains highly volatile.
The present revised appeal covers a period now extended until the end of 2013 for specific activities linked to ability development, health in emergencies and better preparedness for mass casualties. The revised budget is of 9,740,000 usd (nine million seven hundred and forty thousand us dollars), and present coverage stands at 43 % of the appeal.

PRCS urgently calls for its partners to renew their efforts and support its appeal in favour of the victims of the hostilities in Gaza.
