CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (CAR)

5,000 FEWER IDPS; 1,000 FEWER REFUGEES

As of 8 July, there are 530,300 IDPs in CAR, down by nearly 5,000 IDPs since last week. The number of refugees in neighbouring countries has also slightly decreased since last reporting period from 388,529 to 387,712, down by nearly 1,000 refugees. The return of IDPs in Bangui, where over 108,000 IDP reside, remains a priority, notably the return of IDPs living in M’Poko site, CAR’s most populated IDP site. On Despite decreases overall, cross-border movements from CAR persist: on July 11, UNHCR reported that a group of 610 new refugees, who fled attacks in Boda and Bogere, showed signs of exhaustion and starvation, including a dozen adults suffering from severe malnutrition.

MAURITANIA

300 HOMES DESTROYED AND 700 FAMILIES HOMELESS FROM FLOODS On 9 July, a Red Crescent assessment mission revealed that 300 houses have been destroyed and 691 families rendered homeless following heavy rains that caused a dam in M’Bout (southern Gorgol region) to break. At present, around 30 families are sheltered in schools.

NIGERIA

93 ABDUCTEES ESCAPE INSURGENTS IN NORTHEAST; 45 KILLED BY INSURGENT ATTACKS IN BORNO

Some 93 women and children abducted by insurgent group, Boko Haram, escaped captivity in the past week. The women and children are described as in need of food and psychological support and are receiving medical and psychosocial care at an undisclosed location. On 14 July, insurgents attacked Dille village in Borno State, killing 45 people. Several houses and shops were torched and over 500 people forced to flee into nearby hills for safety. Heavy insurgency and counter-insurgency fighting is on-going in Borno with insurgent reportedly making advances across the state and key access points. On 9 July, the Nigerian Government inaugurated the steering committee for Safe Schools Initiative, a program that aims to increase safety of schools and students in the northeast of the country, where violence against schools and school children is the hallmark of insurgent groups operating there.

REGIONAL

888 CASES AND 539 DEATHS FROM EBOLA

As of 10 July, a total of 888 cases (confirmed, probable and suspected) and 539 deaths (confirmed, probable, and suspected) have been reported in Guinea,
Liberia and Sierra Leone. The Sub-regional Outbreak Coordination Centre for the Ebola response has been established in Conakry, Guinea, to consolidate and harmonize the technical support to all affected West African countries and assist to assist with resource mobilization. In Guinea, only one new case reported this week in Gueckedou; in Liberia, Lofa and Montserrado counties are both reporting new cases, and Sierra Leone continues to report the highest number of new cases, notably in Kailahun and Kenema districts.
