NEW CALEDONIA

1. TROPICAL CYCLONE ANNE 700 MILES WEST OF FIJI IS HEADING SOUTHWEST AT 15 KNOTS TOWARDS NEW CALEDONIA WITH WINDS OF 100 KNOTS GUSTING TO 140 KNOTS.

VANUATU

2. HURRICANE ALERT LIFTED. HEAVY RAINS WILL CONTINUE FOR NEXT 24-36 HOURS. WINDS ABATING. NO DAMAGE SO FAR REPORTED TO NORTHERN ISLANDS, HOWEVER COMMUNICATION LINKS PRESENTLY CUT OFF. NATIONAL DISASTER OFFICE HAS BEEN ACTIVATED.

SOLOMON ISLANDS

3. CYCLONE PASSED CLOSE TO EASTERN ISLANDS WITH SOME DAMAGE REPORTED, BUT SO FAR NO ASSESSMENT FIGURES AVAILABLE APART FROM 2000 PEOPLE ESTIMATED AS AFFECTED.

MARSHALL ISLANDS (TYPHOON EBEYE)

4. KWAJALEIN ATOL MARSHALL HIT BY TYPHOON WITH MINOR DAMAGE TO 500 HOUSES AND 350 TOTALLY, RENDERING 3500 PEOPLE HOMELESS. TEMPORARY SHELTER BEING ARRANGED AMD MEDICAL ASSISTANCE REPORTED AS BEING AN URGENT REQUIREMENT. NATIONAL DISASTER RELIEF COMMITTEE COMPILING FULL REPORT.

VANUATU

1. PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT BY AUSTRALIAN AIRCRAFT INDICATES EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO HOUSING ESPECIALLY IN VAUA LAVA AND GAUA WITH SEVERAL HUNDREDS HOMELESS AND FOOD CROPS DESTROYED. WORST HIT AREA IS TORRES GROUP IN NORTH. GOVERNMENT OF VANUATU ASKED AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND USA TO AIRLIFT TENTS, FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES, AND NEW ZEALAND TO PROVIDE AIRCRAFT.

2. NATIONAL DISASTER COMMITTEE MEETING WILL BE HELD EARLY NEXT WEEK TO ASSESS DAMAGE AND IDENTIFY NEEDS.

SOLOMON ISLANDS

3. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN FIJI REPORTED THAT CYCLONE ANNE DAMAGE TO SOLOMONS MINIMAL: 25 HOUSES, 5 CLASSROOMS IN ANUTA, DUFFS, MANUOPO. NO REPORT YET AVAILABLE FROM TILOPIA.

NEW CALEDONIA

1. TROPICAL CYCLONE ANNE AFFECTED NEW CALEDONIA, PRINCIPALLY ON THE EAST COAST AND IN THE SOUTH WHERE CROP DAMAGE HAS BEEN REPORTED. BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN DECLARED A DISASTER AREA. HOWEVER THE CROP DAMAGE HAS BEEN ESTIMATED AS BETWEEN 80 AND 100 PER CENT.

VANUATU

2. A NATIONAL DISASTER COMMITTEE MEETING WAS HELD ON 18 JANUARY TO BRIEF LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES OF AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, FRANCE, UK, USA, UNDP/UNDRO AND ESCAP ON THE PREVAILING SITUATION.

3. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE RENDERED HOMELESS IS 3,100 OF WHICH 1,600 MOST SEVERELY AFFECTED. IMMEDIATE NEEDS FOR SHELTER, FOOD, MEDICINE AND HAND TOOLS HAVE ALREADY BEEN MET, BUT LONGER TERM NEEDS FOR REHABILITATION AND RECONSTRUCTION ARE PRESENTLY BEING CLARIFIED.

SOLOMON ISLANDS

4. NO DETAILED REPORT HAS BEEN RECEIVED SINCE UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 2 DATED 15 JANUARY.

MARSHALL ISLANDS

5. THE EMERGENCY PHASE IS ENDING AND THE SITUATION HAS NOW ENTERED THE REHABILITATION PERIOD.

6. THIS WILL BE THE LAST UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT UNLESS THE SITUATION CHANGES FUNDAMENTALLY.
