Humanitarian flights from Dubai and Malaysia bring vital supplies to Nepal earthquake survivors

Humanitarian cargo flights from the UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Dubai and Malaysia have brought much-needed supplies to people shattered by Nepal’s devastating earthquake.

Yesterday, 35 metric tonnes of emergency shelter items such as tents, tarpaulins and other supplies were airlifted from Dubai to Kathmandu on behalf of Irish Aid, ADRA and Welthungerhilfe.

The Dubai depot is currently preparing cargo and airlifts for several other humanitarian partners, including blankets, emergency health kits, water purification units, and telecommunication equipment. UNHRD’s Malaysia depot dispatched medical equipment and supplies on behalf of Mercy Malaysia last week, while the depot in Panama is preparing to dispatch relief goods this week.

Three of UNHRD’s Rapid Response Team members were deployed to Nepal immediately after the earthquake and are currently supporting cargo receipt at Kathmandu’s international airport, as well as helping construct a storage hub in hard-hit and hard-to-reach Gorkha district.
